When Your Past Haunts

Do people really need to be reminded that the old adage of “the customer is always right?” Earlier this week, Comcast Sports Network Chicago reporter Susannah Collins was relieved of her duties after an on air slip of the tongue, first gained Twitter traction, followed by national attention only to expose her history of starring in an internet series called “Sports Nutz.” The series is a lowest common denominator comedy series feature raunchy or otherwise off color humor. This was found out by the Chicago Blackhawks organization, which Collins was reporting on at the time of the gaffe; they then reportedly contacted CSN Chicago, whom later dismissed Collins.

Upon the announcement of her dismissal, Chicago media personalities have begun taking to social media trying to lay blame for the Blackhawks’ role in CSN Chicago’s decision making and holding them accountable for her firing. Does anyone else see something inherently wrong with this utterly stupid debacle? In as plain and simple English as I can: Susannah Collins was fired for previous career choices which were in direct conflict with the brand and image of the Chicago Blackhawks. Furthermore, CSN Chicago understands that it’s better to be in the good graces of the fast growing market, marketability, and popularity of the Chicago Blackhawks and their brand.

The way I see it, the Chicago Blackhawks are clients, aka customers, of CSN Chicago. The Blackhawks allow CSN to broadcast their games, let their reports conduct interviews / production pieces; CSN then sells the add space for Blackhawk broadcasts. I have no problem with the Blackhawks having substantial influence on how their product is represented on television and they would be well within their rights as a business to ask for a change of representation.

Allow me to put it into context for those whom consume radio media, let me put it in these terms. Think of a radio host’s spoken advertisements they read ads for car dealerships, jewelry stores or an online services easily once an advertisement break. Companies do this because word of mouth advertising is powerful; and who better to market your product than a popular or large market-share radio host? Now, what if the business agent reads, sees, or hears about something that they don’t particularly care for, and could potentially hurt their brand image? What would you do? It happens all the time. How many sponsors bailed on Tiger Woods, Penn State, and best of all, Lance Armstrong?

To all Chicago media personalities, you’re acting like a bunch of spoiled, bratty children. Your friend got fired. She got fired because she thought doing lowest common denominator humor for an internet series would help expose her and be a good career move. Her biggest problem was that it wasn’t associated with any well known comedy troupe or association of comedic actors. If the series was produced by “Funny or Die,” Second City, Saturday Night Live, or even National Lampoon; chances are this isn’t even a story simply because she wouldn’t be hired to cover sports on a full time basis. We all make choices, and we have to live the consequences. I’m not perfect and I’ve made plenty of decisions that I’m not proud of and have had to live the consequences. Thankfully none of those have ever jeopardized my employment or employability. The Blackhawks should have done better research when they found out Susannah Collins was going to be covering their team, and if they didn’t like her image or history, they could have brought it up to CSN Chicago earlier. Other than this minor oversight and since ownership transitioned to Rocky Wirtz, the Blackhawks have easily been the best managed franchise in the city It’s been truly shameful how quickly the Chicago media have decided to put their faith in single mismatched pundit as opposed to a team who has literally come back from the dead in this city and given the fans of this city their first championship since 2005.

I don’t believe it was necessary for CSN Chicago to fire her; but rather a reassignment or studio personality could have sufficed to say the least, especially how quickly the news cycle changes. The opposite can be said as well. Media outlets will keep a story in the cycle when the mood strikes or even better, when it’s convenient. I sadly don’t expect this stupid story to die anytime soon, and I certainly expect it to be on the airwaves for the near future. God forbid a sports talk radio station in the nation’s third largest market, talk sports and not fake, inflated, or structured straw socio-poli-economic men (or women for you PC readers) issues.
