The Tribune Cub
Last week, Kerry Wood threw his last pitch before his beloved team and fan-base. I don’t write that with any intended sarcasm but rather honesty, something that I know I can lack when it comes to any thing Cub. Growing up a Sox fan in a Cub dominated media era, it was hard to ignore all the different things from the steroid fueled home run race, the feverous Wild Card team and the hype of talent arms as seeds and roots of their farm system, only when planted, no magic beanstalk arose to the heavens. So Illinois is Bad at College Sports
Okay so you read the headline of this and think “well that really isn’t breaking news” and you are right. The state of Illinois knows it and if the nation is paying any attention whatsoever then the nation knows it as well. The state’s best college football team over the last few years has been the Northwestern Wildcats who still have yet to ever win a bowl game. And college basketball? Illinois has 12 NCAA div 1 teams and it is likely all 12 will miss the NCAA tournament. Furthermore, “Chicago’s Big Ten Team”, that being Northwestern has never once made the tournament… EVER! Sure there are some smaller “power houses” that Illinois can offer in less mainstream sports and women’s athletics but nobody really cares about that. Read more…
Baseball 101: The Basics
Unfortunately we all get busy and preoccupied so I’d like to extend my apologies for missing what would be an appropriate time to talk about the basics of football. But with the upcoming baseball season, I’ll do my best to relay the most important aspects of the sport nearest and dearest to my heart. What I mean by that is everything action is tracked, has meaning and there is an equal and opposite reaction. If there’s one thing to keep in mind, the game is cyclical. Power and advantages sway back and forth, like a pendulum between leagues and pitchers / hitters. Read more…
Don’t Forget to Enjoy It
I’m not so much telling you, the reader, to enjoy it but more reminding myself to. I often criticize Cubs fans for taking every game of the season to heart so much that it affects their daily lives throughout the long summer months. This Bulls season I have that same kind of feeling, however maybe this time I am in the wrong. Maybe this Bulls season I need to live on every Bulls win or loss so that I don’t miss out the enjoyment of what could quite possibly be a magical championship season in the making. Read more…
A Little Perspective
News flash: no one’s perfect. That includes you, me and the rest of humanity. However here’s what distinguishes an individual, the ability to act when your fellow man or woman is in need.
I’ve admittedly been outspoken regarding the Sandusky child sex abuse case and the been particularly sharp towards individuals that fail to put into perspective the gravity of not only the actions that were allowed to happen, but also the inactions of individuals whom could have stopped such behavior and spared countless children the physical and emotional pain of being abused, molested and raped.
